Here’s a statistic that would make any parent cringe: Motorists run over an average of 50 children a week in driveways and parking lots across the country. Even more troubling is that 7 out of 10 of those children were hit by a direct family member.
Fortunately, most of those children survive. But at least two die, according the children’s advocacy group KidsandCars.org.
It’s the tragic truth that prompted the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to write new rules for rear visibility to improve vehicle safety for children. Even before those rules bring a safer generation of vehicles to America’s streets, let’s try to be a little more vigilant of children around our vehicles.
